Technical Director (Operations) - Food Focused

Job Introduction

We are currently recruiting for a Technical Director based in South Wales. This is a pivotal role for us as the Technical Director will also be responsible for Operations. This is a new role created within the structure. It will be a challenging role bringing the two functions under one person, you will have four direct reports but be responsible for a total team of over 150 people (120 of those are in production).  You will be responsible for all technical aspects at Tillery Valley coupled with operational control for production across Goods In, Low Risk and High Care whilst ensuring that Health & Safety is a priority across the site. 

You must have a technical background (food safety, food quality, external audits etc) with demonstrable strong leadership skills and experience and have the ability to engage and inspire.In return we offer a competitive salary, annual bonus and a fantastic benefits package.

Role Responsibility

  • Oversee the day to day operational and technical activities whilst ensuring a medium to long term strategy / plan is in place
  • Work with both the Leadership and operational teams to deliver Growth and operational excellence
  • Ensure that Health & Safety is a priority across the site
  • Be site lead for Business Continuity and to represent Tillery Valley as a member of the Sodexo Business Continuity Committee
  • Drive staff engagement through effective and regular communication via team briefings, 1:1’s, PDR’s and scheduled performance appraisals and by providing opportunities for feedback
  • Oversee all aspects of manufacturing: Goods In, Low Risk and High Care with specific control on labour, materials and overheads
  • Oversee and provide strategic direction for the technical function, including hygiene team, across the site including food safety, food quality, certification standards and external audits
  • Be the site lead for environmental and waste management, ensuring full legal compliance
  • Oversee the engineering function across the site including general maintenance, fabrication, breakdowns, PPM’s and capital projects, driving continued compliance with all relevant standards.
  • Bring a balanced approach to the business with commercial consideration in all decisions made

The Ideal Candidate

  • Graduate calibre with demonstrable experience in a similar role
  • Significant experience of working for a blue chip food company
  • A strong commercial awareness
  • A track record of working at board level and influencing business strategy
  • Extensive experience in leading teams and implementing successful continuous improvement programmes
  • Ability to motivate, develop and coach people
  • Experience of working successfully with certification and regulatory bodies and implementing associated programmes.
  • An influential, can-do approach with a positive mind-set
  • Strong communication skills across all levels
