Senior Research Technician

Job Introduction

To work within the Technical Laboratory Biology (TLS) Services group undertaking functional whole cell assay support. The TLS Biology group works with scientists in GSK, ensuring high quality technical support, keeping detailed records and accurate data entry into laboratory databases.

Role Responsibility

  • To perform common steps of routine biological assays including compound and reagent ordering, running of assays according to SOPs, analysis of data using corporate tools & application of QC rules to determine if data is fit for purpose
  • Re-order repeats/failures, track assay performance metrics, communicate issues in assays or performance metrics, track reagent use and trigger re-supply through supervisor
  • To undertake daily liaison with scientific staff and other team members
  • To take ownership of the area used including preparation, maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment
  • Comply with all occupational health and safety rules and regulations. Be aware of hazards and recommendations for safety improvements if necessary
  • Operate to approved quality standards (e.g., GLP/GMP) 
  • Maintain QA systems by keeping accurate records of work undertaken, methods used and results achieved. 
  • Publishing & recording experimental results in electronic notebooks.
  • Actively seek opportunities to develop the service by discussion with customer or by the sharing of best practice with other groups
  • Be an active member of the scientific teams – contribute at team meetings and look for opportunities for innovation
  • Assist with the preparation of SOPs, Risk Assessments and other lab documentation
  • To act as an ambassador for TLS and to promote Sodexo’s core values
  • Work flexibly depending on team priorities and support requirements
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by the line manager

The Ideal Candidate

  • BSc in relevant scientific subject (e.g. cell biology, biochemistry or molecular biology).
  • Previous experience of running assays & analysing data
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a laboratory with knowledge of functional cellular based assays
  • Ability to follow protocols consistently and to produce accurate records.
  • Strong computer skills
  • Excellent team-working behaviours, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Highly committed, organised, self-motivated & able to manage a complex workload
  • Ability to understand customer requirements
  • Ability to work autonomously and on own initiative
  • Demonstrable analytical approach to problem solving attitude an advantage
  • Experience in writing technical procedures and safety related documents an advantage
  • IOSH or other safety qualification would be desirable
