Scientific & Technical Services Manager

Job Introduction

We are looking for an experienced manager with a strong scientific background to ensure the effective and compliant delivery of scientific and technical services across the GSK R&D hub site at Stevenage. Reporting into the Scientific Operations Manager, the successful candidate will manage all activities relating to service delivery including line management of seven team leaders, safety and compliance issues, customer engagement and service improvement. Services include but are not limited to, media and reagent prep, in lab support, systems & analytical support, cell culture, scientific assay support and chemical store operations.

This is a diverse scientific role with development opportunities and scope to be innovative.

 

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure the effective and compliant delivery of scientific & technical laboratory service operations across site ensuring customer requirements are met and their needs are anticipated at all times; service functions include but are not limited to:
  • Media and Reagent prep
  • In Lab support
  • Systems & Analytical support
  • Cell culture services
  • Scientific Assay support (biological and chemical based assays)
  • Chemical stores operations
  • All technical laboratory services are delivered in line with the relevant statutory (GxP) advisory and legal and contractual obligations
  • Ensure appropriate management of the service teams within area of responsibility, delivering the services identified in the statement of works, and ensuring that all service requests are allocated, resolved and closed out accordingly
  • Monitor team’s performance to ensure that the services are delivered to the required standard
  • Engage in local customer interaction and foster long term profitable relationships
  • Participate in the development of and implement standards for each work group within area of responsibility to ensure compliance with Legislative, Company, Regulatory (GxP) and Safety regulations
  • Monitor all groups within area of responsibility to ensure that they operate safely and that all appropriate risk assessments, documentation, procedures and audits are in place
  • Carry out inductions and training as per the company’s requirements, including in-house and “Great” training packs
  • Monitor the performance of staff, carry out half yearly & annual PDR’s and provide coaching as necessary

The Ideal Candidate

  • BSc/MSc in a scientific subject
  • 5 years + experience in a management role with demonstrable experience of managing large teams
  • Demonstrable experience of providing a range of scientific & technical services ideally in a pharmaceutical environment
  • Excellent team working, interpersonal & communication skills
  • Highly committed, organised, self-motivated & able to manage a complex workload
  • Flexibility within the contracted hours
  • Strong IT skills
  • Comfortable chairing and facilitating meetings
  • Strong team player and a ‘can do’ attitude
  • Intuitive and proactive nature
  • Working to and achieving targets set
  • Experience of working to GXP regulations would be advantageous
  • A recognized Health & Safety qualification e.g., IOSH or a demonstrable knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation
