Prison Instructor – General

Job Introduction

The Learning & Activities Department delivers a wide range of educational and vocational activities for the 700 residents and seeks to invest in a passionate, open-minded, patient and innovative instructor to join the team.  Reporting to a Team Leader, the role would suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience in a training environment and who possesses the patience and ability to pass on these skills and experience to others in the knowledge that this could help to change their lives for the better.  The position is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measures.

Role Responsibility

  • Plan courses and programmes to deliver training
  • Report on resident’s progress and collaborate with colleagues to improve sentence management, increase core skills and prepare residents for release
  • Encourage, support and sustain residents seeking to broaden their life and practical skills
  • Ensure compliance with relevant teaching, quality assurance and testing/assessment guidelines
  • Create positive opportunities for those residents and promote benefits of achievement.
  • Liaise with prison staff, allocations staff and actively recruit new.
  • Provide a wide range of progressive and stimulating material to residents in conjunction with an overseeing tutor.
  • Prepare residents for assessments where appropriate and encourage demonstrable learning outcomes.
  • Utilise these skills as means of focusing residents on alternative life choices to criminality.
  • Contribute to the preparation of residents who wish to further their education post-release.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Previous experience in a training environment or who can demonstrate they have the necessary skills to teach others
  • SCQF Level 7 in a teaching discipline or willing to work towards; candidates should have knowledge of the principles and practices of adult education; knowledge of instructional planning and teaching methods; skill in use of assessment instruments; ability to develop appropriate educational goals and objectives and an ability to establish and maintain an effective learning environment  
  • Recognised Level 3 qualification or above in an identified subject and professional experience
  • Experience of instructing/supporting challenging individuals / Experience in a prison environment
  • Ability to adjust teaching style to suit different learning styles and the ability to deliver a range of subjects or courses to learners.
  • Able to work a PC and complete basic IT work.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Have an interest in the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders
  • Have an ability to communicate effectively at all times through different mediums, including spoken and written communication.
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Flexibility of work: evenings and weekend work

Package Description

16 to 20 hours per week - salary – Pro Rata: £25,251 plus excellent benefits (including free meals and parking, group discount schemes and pension with 28 days holiday pro rata)

The role would predominately require working Saturdays and 2 evenings a week - there is some flexibility around the evenings that can be worked.
