Part-time Instructor - Learning Skills

HMP Addiewell is a learning prison, with a strong and concerted focus on learning not to reoffend, relevant skills training and employability and we work with all areas of the wider community to ensure prisoners have the best possible chance of leading positive lives following release. Addiewell opened in 2008 and has become an integral part of the Scottish Prison Service estate earning much praise from (amongst others) HMCIP, for its innovation, use of technology, strong partnership working as well as its “can do” culture.

The c30-strong Learning & Wellbeing Department caters for a wide range of educational and vocational needs for the 700 prisoners.  The Learning Instructor will focus on delivering lessons in core areas and will work closely with Tutors to deliver rounded, relevant course material.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the Learning Manager the role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure.  Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Plan courses and programmes to cater for varying levels of knowledge and aptitudes within the prisoner population
  • Deliver absorbing lesson plans to engage and retain prisoner attention and attendance
  • Report on prisoner progress and collaborate with colleagues to improve sentence management, increase vocational skills and prepare prisoners for release
  • Encourage, support and sustain prisoners seeking to broaden their life and practical skills
  • Ensure compliance with relevant teaching, quality assurance and testing/assessment guidelines

The Ideal Candidate

  • We need Instructors with previous experience in training environment – either in education or industry.We will also consider PCOs with strong practical skills with a desire to earn a learning accreditation.
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Evidence of the ability to build relationships across the classroom, department and prison as a whole

 

Personality and attitude are at least as important as experience.  However , whilst we need to see that a Instructor has started to gain the relevant learning and development qualifications, we are prepared to work with exceptional candidates to help the achieve the required accreditations within a reasonable timeframe.
