Job Introduction

HMP Addiewell are currently recruiting for an Instructor (DIY / Home Maintenance).

This is a great opportunity for somebody who has proven experience within a trade, DIY or home maintenance. The role is not labour intensive as you will be demonstrating exercises and supporting offenders with their learning.

Reporting to the Employability & Trades Team Leader, the role would suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience in home maintenance and who possesses the patience and ability to pass on these skills and experience to others in the knowledge that this could help to change their lives for the better. 

HM Prison Addiewell is a high security prison, with a focus on enabling those in its care to change their life pathway. We have a strong and concerted focus on supporting prisoners to address their offending behaviour through delivery of programmes and working with a range of professionals including prison custody officers. We deliver relevant skills via training and employment and work with all areas of the wider community to ensure that prisoners have the best possible chance of leading positive lives following release. 

We have an effective prisoner peer support model, in which prisoners assist staff in the delivery of classes, programmes and activities becoming positive role models for others.

Addiewell opened in 2008 and has become an integral part of the Scottish Prison Service estate earning much praise for our innovation, use of technology, strong partnership working as well as our “can do” culture.

Role Responsibility

  • Teach a wide range of general home maintenance skills to residents at various stages of competency and with different learning styles.
  • Planning, conducting and assessing classroom instructional activities in home maintenance subjects; maintaining educational records; inventory and tool control logs; tracking achievement of desired outcomes.
  • Create positive opportunities for those residents and promote benefits of achievement in vocational subjects.
  • Liaise with prison staff, allocations staff and actively recruit new residents students.
  • Provide a wide range of progressive and stimulating material to residents in conjunction with an overseeing tutor.
  • Prepare residents for assessments where appropriate and encourage demonstrable learning outcomes.
  • Utilise these skills as means of focusing residents on alternative life choices to criminality.
  • Contribute to the preparation of residents who wish to further their education post-release.

The Ideal Candidate

Skills/Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a training environment is desirable however, we will consider applications from candidates who can demonstrate they have the necessary skills to teach others – particularly in construction related trades. 
  • Hold a minimum of SVQ level 3 in a related vocational trade or be willing to work towards.
  • A SCQF Level 7 qualification in a teaching discipline is desirable however, we will consider candidates who do not have this qualification but you must be willing to work towards this (we will put you through the necessary training).
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation
  • Flexibility of work: 40 hrs with occasional evenings and / or weekend work

  • Ability to adjust teaching style to suit different learning styles.
  • Excellent communication and good organisational skills.
  • Able to work a PC and complete basic IT work.
  • Good problem solving skills.
  • Team Player.

Package Description

£25,251 per annum plus excellent benefits (including free meals and parking, group discount schemes and pension with 28 days holiday)

Occasional evening and weekend work will be required
