Healthcare Assistant

Job Introduction

HMP Forest Bank are recruiting for a Healthcare Assistant to manage the doctors surgery daily duties and administrative tasks.

HMP Forest Bank serves the courts of Greater Manchester and maintains strong links to the local community with a focus on resettlement. We aim to deliver quality of life services and support people to change their lives for the better.

Opportunities for learning and developing work-ready skills are on offer for all who come in to custody, but our commitment to reducing reoffending in local communities does not end at the prison gate. We support people released from custody through innovative partnerships in substance misuse services in Bury and Oldham, working with people to maintain recovery and lead law-abiding lives.

As well as the 16 residential units on site, there is a healthcare centre, gym, library, workshop complex, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen. The prison’s capacity stands at 1,460, holding adult men both on remand or sentenced and young prisoners between the ages of 18-21 years.

Role Responsibility

  • Under the supervision of the ISMS team, assist with the delivery and development of substance misuse service within National Guidelines.
  • Provide ongoing support for problematic substance users in custody.
  • Facilitate effective treatment and continuity of care alongside clinical interventions.
  • In line with Forest Bank policy assist with patient’s clinical care including organisation of recovery wings, observing patients, reporting and recording information.
  • Assist in the delivery of planned programmes of care, to promote healthy gains, and maximise independence in substance misuse clients within the prison community.
  • Assist the GPSI in Reception
  • Maintain accurate records and report on all activities undertaken.
  • Gathering information to assist in health needs assessments and profiling of the patient population.
  • Be willing to participate in one to one intervention or within a group setting.
  • Provide relevant information, advice and support to substance users with the aim of reducing harm to themselves and others, reducing the risk of overdose, spread of communicable diseases and lapse/relapse.
  • Provide effective communication and integration with all relevant internal and external partners such as the Offender Management Unit, Programmes, Healthcare and Community Drug Teams.
  • Deal fairly, humanely and openly with all prisoners and combat discrimination wherever it occurs.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience and Knowledge of working with substance users
  • Experience of IT clinical systems
  • Experience managing difficult/complex patients
  • Strong work ethic, able to work alone or as part of a team
  • Skills of working within a patient centred setting
  • Awareness of mental health issues
  • Good record keeping skills and clinical governance knowledge
  • Strong communication skills
  • Flexible for days, nights, weekends rotational shift patterns

Package Description

37.5 hours per week.

Salary £21,214.43 per annum, 20 days holiday plus bank holidays, pension, free meals on duty and free on-site parking.
