Job Introduction

HMP Northumberland are recruiting for a Head of Residential Services.

You will be required to manage, supervise and support Residential Managers and Senior Prison Custody Officers to ensure the effective and efficient management of all house blocks. You will ensure that prisoners live and associate in a safe, secure and decent environment, with H & S and Security issues remaining a priority.

HMP Northumberland offers a variety of initiatives and programmes to help residents engage within the prison’s rehabilitative culture. This includes various educational and vocational qualifications, as well as a variety of opportunities for residents to learn new skills within our workshops and industries departments. We have textile, engineering and electrical workshops and can offer prisoners experience in horticulture, market gardens, cleaning, waste management and laundry services on site.

As a working prison, we work towards the resettlement of residents upon their release into the community and their integration into society through the skills acquired while in our care. We are committed to supporting people to change their lives for the better and lead law-abiding lives.

Being over 4 miles in circumference, the prison is a vast space with exceptionally kept plantation and currently houses over 1300 residents with a range of sentence terms.

Role Responsibility

  • With guidance from the Deputy Director and in accordance with the Company Policy and the requirements of  the Authority, contribute to the development of policies and procedures for the proper operation of the prison
  • Continually review the skills and competencies of the Residential team, addressing performance issues proactively.
  • Ensure that Residential areas carry out their designated activities and services to prisoners in accordance with Policy and Procedures, Health & Safety, Equality & Inclusion, Safer Custody.
  • Management of purposeful activity within areas ensuring accurate weekly returns, maximising opportunities to increase purposeful activity hours and optimising vocational, educational and offending behaviour prospects for offenders.
  • Ensure that prisoner care is of the highest possible standard.
  • Provide leadership and act as a role model to staff and prisoners.
  • Specifically lead on all Resident engagement, Quality of Life, Diversity & Inclusion, IEP, Older Residents and other resident specific work across site, ensuring cohesion within the wider prison objectives and SMT.
  • Provide operational oversight and direction in respect of the delivery of Healthcare with partner agencies.
  • Support the delivery of Health and Safety, Equality & Inclusion and Safer Custody of prisoners and the effective deployment of staff..

Package Description

Salary £48-000 to £56,000 dependent on experience

Working 5 days per week including regular weekends and on call
