Head of Indirect Tax

We are currently recruiting a Head of Indirect Tax (Senior Tax Manager) role based out of offices in Salford Quays. You will be responsible for the day to day management of the Sodexo UK&I indirect tax function. You will manage a team of 3-4 people who are responsible for ensuring Sodexo UK&I’s VAT and other indirect tax compliance obligations are delivered and the team is motivated and engaged.
This role would suit a very senior indirect tax professional currently working at this level, ideally in a multi-national organisation.
Role Responsibility
Overall Direction: Day to day management of indirect tax, including complex advisory Acting as Compliance lead for all UK and ROI Sodexo segments for Indirect Tax Management and review of VAT and Indirect tax returns for the UK and ROI business before final review and sign off by Tax Director Manage and sign off: EC Sales Lists and Intrastat Returns; CIS and RCT returns; and other indirect tax returns Management of indirect tax liabilities (planned for, calculated, and paid on time) Management of indirect tax tax payments and filings compliance calendars Manage indirect taxes claims with HMRC with Tax Director Day to day management of HMRC audits, visits and queries on indirect tax matters Manage adhoc HMRC processes, such as clearance applications, registrations, etc Monitor and advise upon corporate tax compliance in segments and the Shared Service Centre Cost Management and Control: Offer advice and be a key driver of improvements to processes and systems to improve the compliance process, both within the team and within the wider business Maintain, review and test the VAT SAO procedures and documentation to enable the CFO to sign off the certificate to be submitted to HMRC Minimise Indirect Tax liabilities in accordance with Policy Evaluate the impact of changes in indirect tax legislation or developments in the UK &ROI business Reporting & Analysis: Oversee preparation of indirect tax reporting Delivery of timely compliance, Manage quarterly, semi-annual, annual budget and forecasts, and year end reporting for indirect tax to ensure the tax figures are reflected accurately, with hand-on involvement Manage and review the VAT account in the balance sheet Work closely with group accounting team and the auditors and half-year and year end in respect of indirect taxes Other: Independent analysis and research into indirect tax queries raised by the business, for review and discussion with the Tax Director as needed Provide advisory support to the business, and Tax Director To assess the impact of change programmes planned, making recommendations as to prioritisation, resource allocation and plan changes Contingency planning to integrate new demands into a stretched agenda – e.g. acquisition implications Proactive management of relationship with Head of Corporate Tax |
The Ideal Candidate
Essential CiOT qualified (indirect route) Big 4 public accounting firm training Industry experience in multi-national organisations Previous experience in a senior level indirect tax role Preparation and review of returns Able to leverage technical knowledge (tax, accounting, plus software packages) Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the confidence to deal with people at different levels throughout the UK & ROI business Experience in line management of team Balance multiple projects, managing multiple demands, process simultaneously, keep on track Desirable In depth experience and technical knowledge of VAT in retail, and in outsourcing in the healthcare and education sectors In-depth knowledge of VAT return software Able to demonstrate practical process and system knowledge. |
