Deputy Head of Residential Services

Job Introduction

HMP Northumberland are recruiting for a Deputy Head of Residential Services.

You will be required to manage, supervise and support Senior Prison Custody Officers to ensure the effective and efficient management of all house blocks. To ensure that prisoners live and associate in a safe, secure and decent environment, with H & S and Security issues remaining a priority.

HMP Northumberland is the newest addition to the SJS estate.  Our aim is to introduce the technology and initiatives that have been so successful in our other prisons whilst providing real work opportunities for prisoners which match those available in the community.

Sodexo Justice Services delivers custodial and community rehabilitation services that challenge offending behaviour, protect the public and offer individuals the opportunity to change their lives for the better. We deliver the total operation of five prisons within England, Scotland and Wales and own six Community Rehabilitation Companies in partnership with crime reduction charity Nacro.

Role Responsibility

  • Working with the Head of Residential Services and in accordance with the Company Policy and the requirements of the authority, contribute to the development of policies and procedures for the proper operation of the prison
  • Continually review the skills and competencies of the Residential team, addressing performance issues proactively.
  • Ensure that Residential areas carry out their designated activities and services to prisoners in accordance with Policy and Procedures, Health & Safety, Equality & Inclusion, Safer Custody.
  • Contribute to the management of the CSU, Safer Custody Team and any other department within Residential Services
  • Management of purposeful activity within areas ensuring accurate weekly returns, maximising opportunities to increase purposeful activity hours and optimising vocational, educational and offending behaviour prospects for offenders.
  • Ensure that prisoner care is of the highest possible standard.
  • Provide leadership and act as a role model to staff and prisoners.
  • Assist with the management Residence and Safer Custody teams, ensuring cohesion within the wider prison objectives and SMT.
  • Support the delivery of Health and Safety, Equality & Inclusion and Safer Custody of prisoners and the effective deployment of staff.
  • Represent the prison and SJS in the wider community.
  • Adhere and manage in accordance with all Sodexo policies and procedures.

Essential

  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills
  • Proven track record in prison operational experience
  • Experience and understanding of managing incidents
  • Leadership and relationship management
  • Extensive prison management experience
  • Credibility and authenticity
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Serious Incident Command Training/Adjudication Training completed
  • Experience in contractual compliance and delivery

Package Description

Up to £42,000 plus excellent benefits including free parking, group discount schemes and pension with 20 days holiday (plus bank holidays).

Work shifts to cover Duty Manager, including weekends
