Job Introduction

The purposeful activities department caters for a wide range of educational and vocational needs for the 796 prisoners.  The team focus on delivering courses designed to raise prisoners self-esteem and employability skills. Reporting to the purposeful activity team leader the role would suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience in delivering various forms of education in a classroom setting. The role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure.

Role Responsibility

  • Plan courses and programmes to deliver training based on the requirements of the qualifications.
  • Report on residents progress and collaborate with colleagues to improve sentence management, increase core skills and prepare residents for release 
  • Encourage, support and sustain residents seeking to broaden their life and practical skills
  • Ensure compliance with relevant teaching, quality assurance and testing/assessment guidelines
  • To create positive opportunities for those residents and promote benefits of achievement.
  • To liaise with prison staff, allocations staff and actively recruit new residents onto the courses.
  • To provide a wide range of progressive and stimulating material to residents in conjunction with an overseeing tutor.
  • To prepare residents for assessments where appropriate and encourage demonstrable learning outcomes.
  • To utilise these skills as means of focusing residents on alternative life choices to criminality.
  • To contribute to the preparation of residents who wish to further their education post-release.
  • Ability to work as scheduled evenings and weekend as required
  • Any other reasonable professional duties at the request of your Line manager.

The Ideal Candidate

  • We need Instructors with previous experience in a catering/training environment or who can demonstrate they have the necessary skills to teach challenging individuals.
  • Hold the applicable assessor’s award or achieve the assessor’s award within eighteen months of undertaking the role.
  • SCQF Level 7 in a teaching discipline (or equivalent) or achieve this within eighteen months of undertaking the role.
  • Ability to deliver a range subjects within the curriculum of cookery & nutrition, and food hygiene.
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Ability to adjust teaching style to suit different learning styles.
  • Familiar with the SQA framework

Package Description

Cookery and Nutrition Instructor

Full Time – 40 hours per week (Evenings and Weekends Included)

HMP Addiewell, West Lothian

Salary – £25,000 plus excellent benefits (including free meals and parking, group discount schemes and pension with 28 days holiday)
